About Work Experience

High quality work experience is vital if the UK is to offer a world-class education and training system. It gives young people, whilst still in school, the opportunity to experience the world of work and continues to be one of the most effective tools for preparing them for their adult and working lives. Our partners in the business community are extremely supportive of work experience and offer excellent opportunities to young people through their continued participation.

Work ExperienceJohn Daly, a student from Sutton High School, went to RDB Cables, Ellesmere Port, for his work experience. What John particularly liked about his placement was that his co-workers treated him fairly and as an adult. He said, " It’s been good here and a lot different from school. There’s not been much time for rest and I’ve met new people who’ve all been friendly ".

RDB Cables is a staunch local supporter of Work Experience and were so impressed with John that they’ve offered him an apprenticeship when he leaves school. Rob Sumner of RDB told us that as skilled workers are generally in short supply in the manufacturing industry, they’re always on the lookout for promising new employees. As Rob says, "We like to give the students plenty of hands-on experience - under close supervision, of course - to introduce them to all aspects of engineering, which helps them make decisions about what they’d like to do in the future".
